About Us

Hatari was created so that Nairobi residents can report incidents of crime and corruption in their own voices. Hatari is inspired by the belief that citizens have a right to information and a right to be aware of events in their surroundings.

Ultimately, we hope that the police will be open to sharing their official crime reports with us as well. Anyone who spots a crime, or who has been a victim of crime can share his or her experience. You can submit your reports anonymously. You can also sign up to receive alerts about crimes in your neighbourhood.

Hatari administrators will attempt to verify information where possible, and will note when reports are unverified.

The website is currently administered by a group of Nairobi based volunteers including Kahenya Kamunyu, Paul Kahumbu. The Ushahidi team will also be actively supporting the site.

Hatari is powered by the award winning Ushahidi software, which has been used in previous projects like mapping out post-election violence in Kenya in 2007, used by Al Jazeera to report in Gaza in 2008, monitor the Indian, Mexican and Afghanistan elections and track the Swine Flu outbreak in 2009 among others.
